Wheelock United Methodist Church was founded by Rev. Jonah Xu Yang in 1981 in our current location at 21 Wheelock Parkway East, St. Paul, MN. We started with five families (37 members) grew to over 800 members by the time his retirement in 1990. We were formerly known as Hmong Community United Methodist Church. Due to the rapid growth in membership of the congregation, we purchased the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church building at 215 George Street West in the West St. Paul and relocated in 1986. We were the first Hmong Christian Congregation to own a church building in the state of Minnesota and perhaps in the United States. We inspired many Hmong congregations to work toward their own buildings. Prior to Rev. Yang retirement, we contributed to the establishment of more than 13 Hmong United Methodist Congregations throughout the United States. We now have Hmong Methodist Congregations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, North Carolina, and in the country of Laos. In addition, our congregation paved the way for the growth of the Methodist faith in Laos which today included over 70 Methodist congregations and more than 5500 members. We continue to support our Methodist Missionary and fund projects to help the needy in Laos.
We moved back to our original home at 21 Wheelock Parkway East in 2012 to witness the love of God to this community. We changed our name to reflect the cultural diversity in this community. We want to be a church of open hearts, open minds, and open doors to welcome all children
of God. At Wheelock, you will discover that our passion is to provide a place where people just like you can have a life-changing experience with God.
